In addition, Diskin has served as one of the pioneers in the medical industry using hyperbaric oxygen therapy to treat autism.
In her career, Casey Diskin is dedicated to researching and uncovering life-long solutions for children with disabilities, especially those suffering from autism. She creates novel approaches to care to improve symptoms and has been recognized for breakthroughs achieved by employing a combination of behavioral therapy and hyperbaric therapy.
Casey Diskin attributes much of her approach to therapy to the program she attended at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia that focused on functional life skills through naturalistic teaching. The degrees she earned at Macquarie and Wayne State University allow her to uniquely address patients’ needs and provide new potential solutions to children with disabilities such as autism.
Throughout her education and professional career, Diskin has held a firm belief that autism is recoverable, mainly because it’s diagnosed on a set of deficits such as social and emotional functionality that she believes can be improved through specialized therapies. The focus of her unique combination of therapies is to increase those deficits until they no longer meet the criteria for an autism diagnosis, relying on a multi-faceted approach to treatment.
In addition to tailored behavioral therapy, Casey Diskin has begun using hyperbaric oxygen therapy to increase the deficits mentioned above. This unique therapy utilizes increased pressure (usually up to three times higher than normal) in conjunction with high concentrations of oxygen. Patients breathe in much more oxygen than they would normally, which has several positive effects including treating decompression sickness, improving healing for serious infections, ridding air bubbles from blood vessels, and repairing wounds at a faster rate.
Casey Diskin tells us that in order for the body to utilize and heal tissues, they need a steady supply of oxygen. Tissue that is damaged during an injury requires the help of oxygen in the blood to heal optimally. In hyperbaric oxygen therapy, oxygen levels are increased in the blood, which expedites wound healing and provides many direct health benefits.
In her work, Diskin has demonstrated how hyperbaric oxygen therapy can alleviate issues at the core of the autism diagnosis: by reducing swelling in the brain and healing it to perform at higher levels, she helps children suffering from autism live more productive overall lives. While the therapy is used around the world today to expedite healing for a range of conditions and injuries, using it to treat brain injuries and disabilities like autism is still a relatively new science that she’s helping pioneer.
